Did you know that all homes built in Crosswind Cove and The Oaks at Taylor Farm offer the added protection of a FORTIFIED Roof? Based on decades of research by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), FORTIFIED is a voluntary construction program designed to reduce the risk of storm damage. Homes with a FORTIFIED designation meet a rigorous standard established by IBHS with requirements documented by a third-party evaluator.
"DSLD is excited to offer customers homes with roofs scientifically proven to better stand up to hurricanes," said Christopher Clare, Product Development Director.
A FORTIFIED Roof offers protection from hurricanes in three ways:
1. Nail it down – Research demonstrates that using ring-shank nails, in a specific pattern, to attach the roof deck to the home can nearly double the amount of uplift the roof can withstand.
2. Lock it in – Creating strong edges with adhered starter strips and strengthened edge metal helps prevent wind from getting underneath the roof’s edge.
3. Seal it up – The gaps between sheets of roof decking are critical for a roof’s longevity but can make it easy for rain to get into a home if the roof cover is lost from high wind. IBHS science shows that sealing these gaps can prevent 95% of that water intrusion.
"At IBHS, we believe every family deserves a home that can withstand the weather it faces," said Managing Director of FORTIFIED Fred Malik. "DSLD joins a growing list of builders across the country committed to making their products stronger, using IBHS science and the FORTIFIED program."
The FORTIFIED standard has been thoroughly tested at the IBHS Research Center in Richburg, SC, where full-scale structures are subjected to torrential rain driven by winds of up to 130 mph. Post-storm studies, by North Carolina State and Auburn universities, indicate that FORTIFIED homes are less likely to be damaged in storms and have less severe damage when impacted.
