At DSLD Homes, we believe in the power of community, and few stories have touched our hearts as deeply as that of Darla Haro. When we learned about the challenges she had faced for over several years—patching up a storm-damaged home with plastic bags, struggling through each rainstorm, and never asking for help—we knew we had to step in.
Darla’s story first gained attention last year when Norman Chappetta, a longtime Slidell resident, saw her precariously perched on an extension ladder, desperately trying to fix her roof. With no family able to help and no means to qualify for Social Security, Darla had been doing her best to survive. Her determination was nothing short of inspiring, but she needed more than just resilience—she needed a home.
Thanks to the efforts of Slidell Councilman Trey Brownfield, who became Darla’s biggest advocate, and countless generous community members, donations began to pour in. A GoFundMe account was created, and local businesses contributed funds and materials. Yet, the total amount raised wasn’t enough to build a new home—that’s when we at DSLD Homes knew we could make a difference.
Through our connection with developer Jeff Vallee of H1 Associates, we were introduced to Darla’s situation, and the decision was immediate—DSLD Homes would take the lead to ensure her new home becomes a reality. We believe in using our resources and expertise to strengthen the communities we serve, and this was an opportunity to do exactly that.
This project isn’t just about building a house; it’s about restoring hope. When our team met Darla, we saw someone who had been let down too many times but never lost her optimism. It reminded us why we do what we do—to provide homes that bring security, comfort, and happiness.
At DSLD Homes, we are honored to be part of this incredible journey. This isn’t just a construction project—it’s a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to support one of its own. Darla’s resilience, the generosity of our community, and the dedication of everyone involved prove that when people unite for a common cause, truly remarkable things can happen.
